The Chewton Planning Application misses the September 8th Planning Committee meeting at Mendip District Council. It also looks unlikely to meet the September 29th meeting. Rumours suggest that the hunt is confident to get the application approved, but they have another battle with another army of local residents on their hands. They were confident about Priddy!

The hounds and horses settle at their new ‘temporary’ accommodation in Priddy and the village watches and waits. Temporary apparently means ‘up to TWELVE MONTHS’. The prevailing wind blows out towards the main road and away from many residents. How the new residents, temporary or otherwise, are received by the ‘new neighbours’ remains to be seen. The fate of the flesh house is currently unclear, although as usual there are many rumours.

LATEST August
The hunt horses and the whole pack of hounds move to a new site half way between the Hunters Lodge Inn in Priddy and the main Wells to Bristol Road. Hounds and horses are seen exercising regularly on the Wells Road, Priddy, in the early morning.

August 2010
Rumours abound as usual. The ‘Stop Chewton Hunt Kennels’ campaign continues behind the scenes. Mendip District Council requests more information from the hunt and the date for the expected planning meeting comes and goes. Work at the Splott site appears to be on hold. All is apparently quiet.

Underbarrow Farm in Priddy remains beautiful, quiet and the perfect neighbour for the nature reserve next door.

ThisIsSomerset 3.6.10 Hunt kennels plan comments are due - The two opposing camps in the battle over proposed hunt kennels in Chewton Mendip are stepping up their campaigns as the consultation period comes to an end. With comments on the application for a kennels due by next Thursday, the Mendip Farmers Hunt has been leafleting houses in the village and has placed its case on the hunt website, while the anti-kennel group has also taken to the internet to spread its message and has collected a petition against the kennels plan with hundreds of signatures (story)
ThisIsSomerset 3.6.10 Hunt needs kennels - I have read your coverage of the Mendip Farmer's Hunt application with increasing bewilderment. Had we inadvertently applied for a nuclear power station, a ribbon development of brothels, an open-cast mining site?... In making that application, we have followed due planning process to the letter. We asked for the open meeting you reported last week. Like hundreds of others I was disappointed that the key points of the hunt's arguments went unreported. Perhaps they are inconvenient: noise will be unobtrusive; hygiene standards will be inspected monthly by DEFRA and traffic will go up by a grand total of three employees R H J Williams Mendip Farmer's Hunt Long Street Croscombe
I am disgusted that Mendip Hunt is planning to site kennels just along the road from my home in Coles Lane, Chewton Mendip, without having the common decency to consult me I don't want the kennels because of the extra traffic that would be generated on the narrow lane outside my bungalow, which is totally unsuitable for such an increase. Also I shudder to imagine how noisy some 80 hounds would be. I would hate to see the lovely green fields covered in concrete Jackie Hill Chewton Mendip (letters)

More than 150 people packed into the village hall to confront hunt masters about the plans which have been widely criticised by locals  many of them hunt supporters  who felt the villagers' opinions and feelings had not been sought or considered in the making of the application. There was also vocal support for the hunt from a small group of kennel staff and hunters. The meeting heard from Lord Waldegrave, who allows the hunt to use part of the estate, and whose land borders the site. He said there had been little consultation with the site neighbours, and he had only heard about the plans in recent weeks (story)
